Welcome Ezra

So this is our new little guy, who arrived last night at about 11pm. He took his time getting up to speed after his emergence, causing us some stress and keeping our midwives working hard for an hour or so after the birth. Turned out all good, though. And he's wicked cute -- just look at those cheeks! As Tannis said in the original post, he's a hefty 9lbs 14 ounces, and seems to be figuring out the nursing thing...so look out.

Tannis didn't have a very long labour, but she spent most of it in the birthing pool, which was apparently fantastic. Maybe I haven't mentioned it before, but Tannis is a superhero. There's no other way to say it, really -- she has amazing superpowers. I don't know how anyone could see a woman giving birth and not be overwhelmed by awe.

The girls are thrilled by their new little buddy. Ivy stayed up through the action and Ella woke up to meet him at about 4:30am while I was rocking him to sleep. This morning they took turns holding him for long stretches where they'd sing to him and stroke his hair gently. Beautiful.

And now we have an extra person in our house. An extra little person in our family, just like that. A miracle.

All right! *high fives*

Commentator: "Coach Hiebert now has some important decisions to make. The man-to-man defense that he has employed so successfully over the past few years is up for an overhaul. He's got about 18 months to perfect an effective zone defense, especially one that can handle the distractions of the girls whle the boy shoots up the middle."

Coach Hiebert: "I'm up for it."

Congrats J & T! All the best as you take on the challenge of three kids...we're loving it but it takes a bit to get used to. Jer - we'll have to get the boys together sometime for a good mtn bike ride eh? Love the name too!

Congratulations to you all. How exciting. My first reaction was, omagod he looks like Grandpa Hiebert (which isn't a bad thing), but I am sure he has a little of everyone in him. What a cutie! And Tannis, you are a superhero. Wow, three beautiful children. That picture of you in the birthing pool is gorgeous! Jer, you should be able to sell it and retire on the proceeds. Looking forward to more pictures. Enjoy the new babe. Love Auntie Carol

What a little mensch!

Wow, overwhelmed by the wonderful comments and e-mails that poured in after this post. Thanks so much to all of you...so many dear friends have checked in with us this week.

I can't respond to all of these, but a couple require notes...

Chris, we've been pondering the shift to the zone defense. Last years' Canucks have inspired us to attempt The Trap, which we've adapted to our own context by coercing Tan's dad into building the most awesome playhouse ever, to draw the attention of the other team's biggest forwards. It's working so far.

Auntie Carol, if you can find me a buyer, retiring on the proceeds of anything sounds great to me. Keep me posted.

Angelo, I'm taking "mensch" as a compliment, but I have no idea what it is. Sounds a bit like shnerp.

Angelo said...

Oh, yeah... it's definitely a compliment! It's the first thing that came to mind when I saw his picture. In platt deutsch it means 'man', and to me Ezra looks like an old soul. But in Yiddish it means 'stand up guy' or 'person of substance'... 'Now there's a real mensch!'

Jeremy said...

Funny, Tannis mentioned the "old soul" in reference to Ezra last week too. He looks at you with these knowing eyes.
