Who says "exploring play" isn't school work - I made my college students run laps in my principles of teaching class to wake them up to the idea of how theory precedes practice. So if one believes you learn better after exercising - you better exercise. Enjoy! We'll be joining the homeschool club on my Sabbatical next January - may need some advice regarding curriculum!

Yes, you're right. There are a few big benefits for us in the home learning, but one of the biggest is that it frees up a lot of time for the girls to do what they want.

Curriculum-wise, it depends what you're trying to accomplish. Your school district (like ours) probably has curriculum they could provide, and you could supplement with outside materials...or go radical and unschool for the year, letting them follow their noses toward whatever interests them.
